Overview

The INTO THE WOODLAND SCOPE (2023-2-IT02-KA210-SCH-000177756) project addresses the increasing need for innovative, inclusive and holistic educational approaches in primary and lower secondary education.

Modern education systems are still largely based on indoor, classroom-centred learning, which significantly limits students’ physical activity, social interaction and contact with natural environments. This situation negatively affects learners’ well-being, motivation, social and emotional development, particularly among students with fewer opportunities, learning difficulties or health-related constraints.

In response to these challenges, ITWSCOPE introduces the Forest School approach as a complementary educational method integrated into school education. Forest pedagogy uses out-of-school natural environments—such as forests, green areas and open outdoor spaces—as meaningful learning settings. This approach supports students’ holistic development by combining academic learning with the development of social, emotional, physical and environmental competences through experiential, student-centred and cooperative activities.

The project focuses on inclusive education, ensuring equal access to learning opportunities for all students, with particular attention given to learners facing social, educational or health-related barriers. Through structured out-of-school activities, students are encouraged to actively participate in learning, build self-confidence, improve cooperation and communication skills, and develop a positive relationship with nature.

A key objective of the project is to collect, design, test and share good practices related to out-of-school forest activities and pedagogical approaches. These practices will be compiled into a practical e-book, which will serve as a concrete project result. The e-book will include ready-to-use activities, methodological guidelines and inclusive strategies adapted to primary and lower secondary education and will be made freely available to educational institutions across Europe.

Through transnational cooperation between partner organisations from different countries, ITWSCOPE strengthens the exchange of expertise, promotes innovative teaching practices and contributes to the long-term improvement of inclusive, sustainable and learner-centred education.
